Description
Pentasa 500 mg (Mesalazine 500mg)
Pentasa 500 mg (Mesalazine 500mg) is a medicine that is used to treat mild to moderate ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. It is a type of drug called 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA). Know about its investigations, side effects, dosage, how to work, how to use, how long does it last, side effects, dosage, and Precautions.
Pentasa 500 mg is one of a group of medicines called aminosalicylates (5-ASAs) and is one of the most commonly used aminosalicylates. It is used to treat ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease (more generally ileocolitis) – which are both forms of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). It’s not known precisely how mesalazine works, but it is thought to affect the way the cells lining the intestine make and release certain chemicals which are considered to affect IBD.
There are various brands of Mesalazine, and they are all manufactured in slightly different ways to allow the mesalazine to be released in the part of the intestine which requires it the most. The type of pentasa 500 mg you are prescribed will depend on where your IBD is.
Hemorrhagic recto colitis: Attack treatment for mild to moderate flares and maintenance treatment.
Crohn’s disease: Attack treatment for mild to moderate flare-ups and prevention of acute attacks for frequently recurrent forms.
Pathologies for which this drug may be prescribed:
- Hemorrhagic recto colitis
- Crohn’s disease
5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA or mesalamine) belongs to the group of medications known as an anti-inflammatory. It is used to manage mild-to-moderate ulcerative colitis and mild-to-moderate Crohn’s condition. 5-ASA acts by reducing infection in the bowel.
Different brands of 5-ASA are designed to act on different places in the gastrointestinal tract (the digestion tube that runs from the mouth to the anus). Ulcerative colitis affects the colon and rectum only, while Crohn’s disease affects the whole gastrointestinal tract. For this reason, some brands are used to treat only ulcerative colitis, while others can be used to treat both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
Take your Pentasa 500 mg dose at the same times each day. If you forget to take your dose, take it quickly that day. Swallow the tablet or granules with half a glass of water. Swallow them whole, so without chewing. This keeps the protective layer intact. This protective layer may only dissolve in the intestines so that the active substance is released there and not in the stomach.
Pentasa tablets can also be dropped into a glass or spoonful of water or other beverage beforehand. That takes a few minutes. Make sure that you swallow all the ‘granules’ that arise and that you do not chew on the grains. Other brands of tablets cannot be dropped! You can also sprinkle the Pentasa pellets on some food, such as yogurt.
If you take this medication once a day: does it take more than 8 hours before you use the next dose frequently? Then take the forgotten dose. Does it take less than 8 hours? Then skip it. Would you like to take the treatment now? Do this, but take the next dose for 8 hours afterward.
If you take this medication twice a day: does it take more than 4 hours before you use the next dose usually? Then take the forgotten dose. Does it take less than 4 hours? Then skip it. Would you like to take the treatment now? Then do that, but take the next dose for 4 hours afterward. If you take this medicine 3 or 4 times a day: does it take more than 1 hour before you use the next dose frequently? Then take the forgotten dose. Does it take less than 1 hour? Then skip it.

Yes, Certain Aspects of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis Can Affect Fertility. Fertility is broadly thought of, for women, like the ability to become pregnant with a baby. There is more to the story, however, particularly in women who have a chronic illness such as inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Yes, in the absence of treatment, Crohn’s disease usually tends to get worse over time and may result in serious complications. These are called flares. The flares typically alternate with periods of remission when there’s no active inflammation or symptoms. Those with early or mild disease usually have milder symptoms.
Yes right, it can also run in families. About 20 percent (1 in 5) of people who have Crohn’s disease have a blood relative with some form of inflammatory bowel disease, usually a brother or a sister, and sometimes a parent and child. Crohn’s disease is generally diagnosed in people between the ages of 20 – 30.
Still, it’s a severe disease that can cause some dangerous complications, especially if you don’t get the right treatment. Ulcerative colitis is one form of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Ulcerative colitis is a lifelong situation that you have to manage, rather than a life-threatening illness.
